In the days I didn’t have time to post, Loki had two milestones that should not pass unremarked.
First, he caught a mouse. Or maybe it was a mole; I didn’t get a good look. We were walking down the street and suddenly, he had a critter in his mouth. I shrieked, which startled Loki just enough that the critter was able to slip away.
A perfect resolution, if you ask me. He gets credit for the catch and I didn’t have to worry about him eating it.
Second, he has been an absolute gentleman when meeting people lately. He has not jumped at all and has mouthed very little. Even when a 2-year-old decided to play with his tail, he remained quite calm. He also was very friendly when a pair of daschunds came charging at him the other day. They were trying to act tough, but Loki just sniffed at them politely and wagged his tail.
He’s pretty much to the point now that if I stop to chat with someone while we’re out walking, he’ll wait politely. We only run into problems when people walk up and act like they’re going to pet him, then get intimidated by his size and back off. Since Loki can’t imagine anyone being afraid off HIM, he assumes it’s a game and they want him to jump. So he obliges. Things generally go downhill from there.
It hasn’t been an issue lately, though.
Walks have been pretty pleasant lately, aside from his habit of trying to eat anything he can get his mouth on — including garbage, dry grass and mice. Yuck.

JUST A KIND WORD, WE USED TO RAISE GREAT PYRENEES, DON’T KNOW IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE BREED. HOWEVER IT IS USUALLY NOT A GOOD IDEA TO SHSVE A DOGS COAT FOR SUMMER, THAT COAT IS WHAT KEEPS THEM COOL.
I hadn’t heard that before. Thanks for the tip. It sounds like maybe the thing to do is have his coat thinned a bit.
